Greek Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014 – An initiative of the Greek social entrepreneurship community

Background
In the last 12 months, more than a dozen events in Greece were organised to raise awareness on the benefits of social enterprises for the society and to mobilize talents, donors, investors, customers, citizens and civil society organisations to engage in social entrepreneurship.
However; stakeholders and people that are, or intend to become, engaged in social entrepreneurship activities fear that a fragmentation of efforts and resources will not achieve the mobilization and capacity building needed to give social enterprise a role in rebuilding the social and economic fabric of Greece.

For the first time in Greece, leading organisations of the Greek social entrepreneurship community have therefore teamed up, joined efforts and aligned their public events to provide a common event and platform for inspiration, encouragement, learning, cooperation and advocacy of social entrepreneurs and key actors in their ecosystem.
This joint initiative of the Greek social entrepreneurship community will be organised under the common umbrella of the

Greek Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014, November 15-21, 2014.

Objectives
The Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014 will try and enter new territory by focusing on challenges for social entrepreneurship in Greece that so far have been given little attention, and by providing space for collective efforts to finding solutions to tackle social, environmental and community development challenges :

  • Scaling of social impact:
Present proven business models of social enterprises that could be replicated or adapted in Greece
  • Working with the public sector
Bring together social entrepreneurs, local and regional authorities and social finance providers, and encourage and empower them collaborate
  • Social Innovation
Mobilise social entrepreneurs and supporting organisations for shaping social change in Greece in a social process, for a social aim
  • Catalyze commitments of a broad range of stakeholders to support the development of a nurturing ecosystem for social enterprise as a driver to change
  • Provide assistance in developing visions and presenting models for social entrepreneurs, in activating potentials, in learning from good practice, in building capacities for and in social enterprises, and in exploiting synergies through joint efforts and cooperation.

The Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014 will serve as a catalyst for initiating social and economic change in the fields of social finance, sustainable community development and tourism, agriculture and food, civic participation, public procurement, social and economic inclusion and empowerment. Its catalytic role will be to bring together social entrepreneurs from Europe and from Greece, that are energetic in finding solutions and that are committed to implement these in the Greek social and economic fabric.

The Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014 also aims at increasing visibility of social enterprises and their social and economic impact. It will therefore give the Greek social enterprise community and its ecosystem a face and a voice.

The Social Entrepreneurship Week 2014 therefore should be seen as

an amplifier in the process of developing a nurturing ecosystem for social enterprises in Greece, in which support organisations, dedicated providers of business start-up and development services, social investors and public authorities at local and regional level collaborate, and

an exchange and learning platform pioneering providing information and space for new challenges and opportunities for social enterprises in Greece.

Target audience
The conferences, seminars, trainings and presentations during the Social Entrepreneurship Week aim at raising awareness and building capacities of social entrepreneurs interested in establishing a social enterprise, existing Greek social enterprises interested in consolidating or expanding their operations and impact stakeholders and supporters of developing a conducive ecosystem for social enterprises in Greece, in particular in the fields of social finance, sustainable community development and tourism, agriculture and food, civic participation, public procurement, social and economic inclusion and empowerment
